The Newt BioBlitz

Citizen Science In Action

A BioBlitz is citizen science in action, and the last day of the Great Garden Show is your chance to take part. Covering mammals, birds, insects and plant life, help us discover how many different species we have here at The Newt.

You can sign up to our official sessions and contribute your recordings to our scientific findings alongside our experts, or join in as a casual observer by picking up a BioBlitz recording sheet and wandering at your own pace.

Where Does The Data Go?

The data you gather will be shared with the Somerset Environmental Records Centre, helping to build a valuable long-term picture of nature across the region, and influencing how they respond. The research may lead to funding for a special project, habitat enhancement or changes to land management.

For the estate, this annual snapshot allows us to track our wildlife progress over time. By keeping a close eye on species and how they’re faring, we can spot patterns of growth or decline and respond thoughtfully, making better, evidence-led decisions to support a thriving landscape.

Family Fun

Become a Newt naturalist for the day and explore meadows, gardens and ponds on the lookout for creatures great and small. From great crested newts to slow worms, butterflies to dormice, our recording sheet suggests species to keep an eye out for and the places you're most likely to spot them.

Newtlings can also get involved with our Biomimicry ‘Art in the Garden’ costume workshop, a chance to get creative using nature as your inspiration. Taking place in the picnic area, this is a drop-in activity, so no need to book.
