Newtlings Short: Young Falconers – The Art of Falconry
13 April / 10:00am
Step into an ancient craft and meet birds of prey through the eyes of a falconer.
Sessions will run at 10am, 12pm & 2.30pm and last an hour.
£ 18 per person.
Falconry is one of the oldest partnerships between people and nature: an art built on patience, trust and respect. In this immersive Newtlings session children will become young falconers for the day, guided by expert falconer Jim and the Newt team.
The workshop begins with an introduction to the history of falconry and the remarkable birds involved. Children will learn how falconry has evolved from an ancient hunting practice into a modern craft rooted in conservation, rescue and education.
Meeting the birds one by one, Newtlings will discover how different species fly, hunt and survive and hear the stories behind the birds in Jim’s care.
With careful guidance, each child will have the opportunity to handle the friendliest of our birds of prey, learning how calm movement, steady posture and quiet voices help build trust between human and bird.
As the session unfolds, learning is woven through live demonstrations – from falconry equipment and techniques to the natural diets and daily care of the birds. Children will also be introduced to the wider conservation work supported at The Newt, offering a glimpse into how ancient skills continue to play a role in modern wildlife care.
Sessions last an hour. Only suitable for ages 6 and above. Children must be accompanied by an adult (who attends free of charge).
Please note: as part of this authentic falconry experience, birds’ natural diets will be displayed and discussed.
