Spring has arrived and with it, a very important question: have the hedgehogs begun to stir?

In this hands-on Newtlings Watch Club, children will step into the role of Newt Conservationists for the day, joining resident wildlife expert Dr Tom to learn about hedgehogs, their habitats, and the gentle work involved in caring for vulnerable animals.

The session begins indoors with an introduction to Britain’s much-loved nocturnal mammals, why hedgehog numbers are sadly declining, and how places like The Newt can offer protection.

Then it’s time to head out on a real Hedgehog Watch mission. Equipped with booklets and observation tools, children will help Dr Tom carry out seasonal checks: inspecting food and water bowls, looking for tracks and signs of activity, and watching live camera footage to see who’s been out exploring.

Along the way, Newtlings will learn how to create hedgehog-friendly habitats and what it truly means to care for wildlife with patience and respect.

Each session lasts an hour and a half. Ages six and above welcome unaccompanied.

Please note: as with all wild animals, hedgehog sightings cannot be guaranteed – but we will look for clues, signs and footage as part of the experience. Our Hedgehog Watch Club is designed as a gentle, educational, conservation-led experience. Children should feel comfortable with calm observation, discussion, and practical nature-care tasks.
