Gather & Grow: Lally Snow - War Photographer, Author, Film Maker
26 March / 6:00pm
Stories from the front lines of conflict - and the quiet power of gardens in places shaped by war.
Award-winning photojournalist, writer and filmmaker Lalage ‘Lally’ Snow has spent nearly two decades documenting conflict and everyday life across the Middle East and Afghanistan. After making Kabul her home for more than five years, she reported for The Sunday Times, Financial Times, The Telegraph and Granta, and has also worked in Gaza, the West Bank, Israel, Eastern Ukraine, Bangladesh, Jordan and Iraq.
Her first book, War Gardens, explores modern conflict through the unexpectedly gentle act of gardening - a moving meditation on resilience, hope and humanity in places shaped by war.
An original and adventurous storyteller, Lally often brings together journalism, photography and film in personal projects that have been exhibited internationally. She produced, filmed and directed Afghan Army Girls for Channel 4, while her work has been featured at the Smithsonian Museum in Washington DC. More recently, she created the BBC documentary The Gardeners of Kabul, which she also narrated.
A thoughtful and engaging speaker, Lally has given talks at MIT, The Frontline Club, NATO Headquarters (SHAPE), The French Embassy in Kabul, The Garden Museum, and the North Hampshire Literary Festival. Her talks range widely - from gardening in Eastern Ukraine to the experiences of women in Afghanistan, the cuisine of the West Bank, and the impact of PTSD on soldiers.
