Drystone walls are an important part of the Somerset rural identity and have been so for millenia. Building drystone walls is not only hugely satisfying physically, but it also promotes mindfulness and time for healthy reflection.

The day begins with a brief introduction on the history, theory and design of drystone walls with celebrated drystone waller Tom Trouton. You choose to build any or all of the following: dry stone wall, retaining wall, moon gate, fire pit, ornamental pear statue, water feature.

All materials and equipment are provided.

We suggest wearing steel-toe cap boots and sturdy clothes.

Includes: Tea & coffee on arrival with the Bakery’s signature cinnamon bun, and a picnic lunch.

"Dry stone walling was a great day. Arthur, Tom and his team gave a most enjoyable and very informative day out and would highly recommend. Thank you." - Drew

"Tom gave us an excellent course on dry stone walling. I thoroughly enjoyed my morning, and I will highly recommend these types of courses held at the Newt to my friends." - Tony

I felt I had to reach out to you and express my deepest gratitude for an amazing day today. I left with a true bounce in my step. It was, by far, one of the best activities I have ever done. Your delivery and interaction with us all was outstanding, the whole experience will be one I will remember for many years to come. It was really up my street; I love working outside on the best of days but to create something that becomes part of the surroundings is magical. Again, I just wanted to share my appreciation and thoughts with you on such an amazing opportunity." - Aldo

"Tom is an outstanding and passionate tradesman, and kept us all on form throughout the day, with an encyclopedic knowledege on drystone walling and a real ability to engage and demonstrate with each of us at all levels. Arthur was an excellent host and also very engaged in our whole Newt / dry stone walling experince. The Oak tree venue next to the cafe was a perfect setting, and also allowed other visitors to get a glimpse of the Newt life as they passed by. The coffee supply was greatly appreciated and the picnic food was outstanding." - Deon

"Dry stone walling workshop was so good and enjoyable, I hope you do more, and it's something I'd book again and send my sons on it! It was very informative and you looked after us very well. Delicious sandwiches and plenty of liquids. Thank you!" - Cathy
